Judge throws out former enugu deputy governors impeachment
A recent development in Nigeria!
According to reports, a High Court in Enugu State has thrown out the impeachment proceedings against a former Deputy Governor of Enugu State, Sunday Onoh.
The court, in a ruling delivered on Monday, February 27, 2023, held that the impeachment process against Onoh was unconstitutional and lacked merit.
The impeachment proceedings were initiated by the Enugu State House of Assembly in 2015, alleging that Onoh had committed various acts of misconduct and gross violation of the constitution.
However, the court, in its ruling, held that the impeachment process was not in line with the provisions of the Enugu State House of Assembly's Standing Orders and the 1999 Constitution of Nigeria.
The court also ordered the Enugu State House of Assembly to pay Onoh the sum of N50 million as damages for the unlawful and unconstitutional impeachment proceedings.
This development is significant, as it highlights the importance of upholding the rule of law and ensuring that public officials are not subjected to arbitrary and unconstitutional actions.
What do you think about this development? Should public officials be held accountable for their actions, or should they be protected from arbitrary actions?
