John 14 good news bible

Here is John 14 from the Good News Bible (GNB):

John 14

Jesus Comforts His Disciples

14:1 "Don't let your hearts be troubled. Trust in God, and trust also in me. 2 There is more than enough room in my Father's home. If this were not so, would I have told you that I am going to prepare a place for you? 3 When everything is ready, I will come back and take you to be with me; then you will be where I am.

4 "You know the way to the place where I am going."

5 "No, we don't know, Lord," Thomas said. "We have no idea where you are going, so how can we know the way?"

6 Jesus told him, "I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. 7 If you really knew me, you would know my Father also. From now on, you do know him and have seen him."

8 Philip said, "Lord, show us the Father. That is all we need."

9 Jesus replied, "Have I been with you for so long a time, and you still do not know me, Philip? Whoever has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say, 'Show us the Father'? 10 Do you not believe that I am in the Father and the Father is in me? The words that I say to you I do not speak on my own authority. Instead, it is the Father living in me who is doing his work. 11 Believe me when I say that I am in the Father and the Father is in me; or at least believe it on the evidence of these miracles I have done.

12 "I tell you the truth, anyone who believes in me will do the same works I have done, and even greater works, because I am going to be with the Father. 13 You can ask for anything in my name, and I will do it, so that the Son of God may be glorified through it. 14 You may ask me for anything in my name, and I will do it.

Jesus Promises the Holy Spirit

15 "If you love me, you will obey my commands. 16 And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Helper, the Spirit of truth. He will never leave you or abandon you. 17 He is the Holy Spirit, who leads people to understand all that is true. 18 The world at large cannot receive him, because it cannot see him or know him. But you know him, because he remains with you and will be in you.

19 "I will not leave you as orphans; I will come to you. 20 On that day you will realize that I am in my Father, and you are in me, and I am in you. 21 Those who accept my commandments and obey them are the ones who love me. And because they love me, my Father will love them, and I will love them and reveal myself to them."
