Isaiah 58 good news bible
Here is Isaiah 58 in the Good News Bible (GNB):
Isaiah 58
"Shout loudly, don't cry, raise your voice like a trumpet! Announce to my people their rebellion, to the people of Jerusalem their sins.
Yet day after day they seek me, they seem eager to know my ways, as if they were a nation that does what is right and has not forsaken the judgment of their God. They ask me for righteous judgments, they delight in the nearness of God.
'Why have we fasted,' they say, 'and you have not seen it? Why have we humbled ourselves, and you have not noticed?'
Look, you serve your own interests on your fast days, and you try to force your own will on your fellow humans. You fast, but you quarrel and hit each other. You fast, but you do not do what is just, and you oppress your workers.
You fast, but you do not let the oppressed go free, and you do not feed the hungry. You fast, but you do not provide shelter for the homeless. You fast, but you do not clothe the naked. You fast, but you do not help those who are in trouble.
So, when you fast, don't make a gloomy face like the hypocrites. They neglect their appearance so that people will see them fasting. I assure you, they have already been paid in full.
But when you fast, put oil on your head and wash your face, so that you will not be seen by people to be fasting, but only by your Father, who is in secret. And your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.
If you remove the yoke from among you, the pointing finger, the speaking of evil, and if you offer your food to the hungry and satisfy the needs of the oppressed, then your light will rise in the darkness, and your gloom will become like the noon.
The Lord will guide you always; he will satisfy your needs in a sun-scorched land. He will strengthen your frame; you will be like a garden that is refreshed by water.
Those who are righteous will be like a tree planted by streams of water, which bears fruit in season and whose leaves do not wither. Whatever they do will prosper.
If you hold back your foot because of the Sabbath, and do not do as you please on my holy day, and if you call the Sabbath a delight and the Lord's holy day honorable, then you will honor it by not doing your own ways or speaking your own words.
You will find your joy in the Lord, and I will make you ride on the heights of the earth. I will feed you with the heritage of Jacob, your father. For the mouth of the Lord has spoken."
