Installing a new toilet
Installing a new toilet can be a bit of a challenge, but with the right tools and a little patience, you can do it yourself. Here's a step-by-step guide to help you through the process:
Tools and Materials Needed:
- New toilet
- Toilet flange (if not included with the toilet)
- Wax ring
- Toilet bolts
- Toilet seat and lid
- Adjustable wrench or basin wrench
- Channel-type pliers (for removing old toilet)
- Putty knife or scraper (for removing old adhesive)
- Bucket or container (for catching water)
- Gloves and safety glasses (optional)
Step 1: Shut Off the Water Supply
- Locate the shut-off valve behind the toilet and turn it clockwise to shut off the water supply to the toilet.
- Flush the toilet to drain the tank and bowl.
Step 2: Disconnect the Water Supply Line
- Use an adjustable wrench or basin wrench to loosen the nut that holds the water supply line to the toilet.
- Once loose, use your hands to twist the line counterclockwise and remove it from the toilet.
Step 3: Remove the Old Toilet
- Use channel-type pliers to loosen the old toilet from the floor by prying it away from the flange.
- Once loose, use your hands to lift the toilet off the flange and set it aside.
Step 4: Remove the Old Wax Ring
- Use a putty knife or scraper to remove the old wax ring from the flange.
- Be careful not to damage the flange or surrounding area.
Step 5: Install the New Wax Ring
- Take the new wax ring and press it onto the flange, making sure it's centered and evenly spread.
- Use your fingers or a putty knife to shape the wax ring to fit the flange.
Step 6: Install the New Toilet
- Place the new toilet over the flange, making sure it's centered and evenly aligned.
- Use your hands to lift the toilet and press it onto the flange, making sure it's securely seated.
Step 7: Tighten the Toilet Bolts
- Use the toilet bolts to secure the toilet to the floor.
- Tighten the bolts in a star pattern (tightening one bolt a little, then moving to the next one, and so on) to avoid damaging the toilet or surrounding area.
Step 8: Reconnect the Water Supply Line
- Place the water supply line back onto the toilet and tighten the nut clockwise.
- Make sure the line is securely attached and not leaking.
Step 9: Turn On the Water Supply
- Turn the shut-off valve counterclockwise to turn on the water supply to the toilet.
- Check for leaks by flushing the toilet several times.
Step 10: Install the Toilet Seat and Lid
- Place the toilet seat and lid onto the toilet, making sure they're securely attached.
Step 11: Test the Toilet
- Flush the toilet several times to test for leaks and proper function.

- Make sure to follow the manufacturer's instructions for the specific toilet you're installing.
