Insecurity: Lawan Advocates Constitutional Role for Traditional Rulers

The President of the Senate, Ahmad Lawan, has called for a constitutional role for traditional rulers in the country's governance structure, citing their importance in addressing the current security challenges.

Lawan made the call on Tuesday during a meeting with traditional rulers from the North-East zone at the National Assembly in Abuja.

The Senate President noted that traditional rulers have been playing a crucial role in maintaining peace and stability in their respective communities, and that their involvement in governance could help to address the current security challenges facing the country.

"We believe that traditional rulers have a critical role to play in our national life, particularly in addressing the security challenges we are facing," Lawan said. "We want to see a constitutional role for traditional rulers in our governance structure, so that they can be more effective in their roles."

Lawan also commended the traditional rulers for their efforts in promoting peace and stability in their communities, and urged them to continue to play their roles in maintaining law and order.

"We appreciate the efforts you are making to promote peace and stability in your communities," he said. "We want to see more of that, and we want to work with you to ensure that our communities are safe and secure."

The meeting was attended by traditional rulers from Borno, Yobe, Adamawa, Gombe, and Bauchi states, among others.

The call for a constitutional role for traditional rulers is part of the efforts to strengthen the country's governance structure and to ensure that traditional rulers are more involved in the decision-making process.

In recent years, traditional rulers have been playing a more prominent role in governance, particularly in the North-East zone, where they have been working closely with security agencies to address the insurgency in the region.

The meeting between Lawan and the traditional rulers was seen as a step in the right direction, as it highlights the importance of traditional rulers in the country's governance structure.

It is hoped that the call for a constitutional role for traditional rulers will be taken seriously by the government and other stakeholders, and that it will lead to a more effective and inclusive governance structure in the country.
