The Holy City, New Jerusalem!
In Christian eschatology, the Holy City, New Jerusalem, is a prophesied future city that will be the dwelling place of God and the redeemed. It is described in the Book of Revelation, the final book of the New Testament in the Bible.
According to Revelation 21:2, the Holy City is said to come down from heaven, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband. It is described as a city with:
- Walls made of jasper and a foundation of precious stones (Revelation 21:18-21)
- Twelve gates, three on each side, with angels at each gate (Revelation 21:12)
- A river of the water of life, flowing from the throne of God and of the Lamb (Revelation 22:1-2)
- No temple, for God and the Lamb are the temple (Revelation 21:22)
- No need for the sun or moon, for the glory of God illuminates the city (Revelation 21:23)
- The throne of God and of the Lamb, with the four living creatures and the twenty-four elders (Revelation 4:4-6)
The Holy City, New Jerusalem, is often seen as a symbol of God's presence and redemption, and is associated with the ultimate fulfillment of God's plan for humanity. It is also seen as a place of eternal joy, peace, and harmony, where God dwells among his people.
In Jewish tradition, the concept of the New Jerusalem is also significant, as it is seen as a future city that will be rebuilt and restored in the messianic era. The prophet Isaiah describes the New Jerusalem as a city of gold and precious stones, with a wall of fire and a foundation of precious stones (Isaiah 54:11-12).
