Has the new minimum wage been approved
The minimum wage in the United States is set by each state, and some cities and counties also have their own minimum wage laws. As of January 2023, the federal minimum wage is $7.25 per hour, which has been in effect since July 2009.
However, there have been ongoing efforts to increase the federal minimum wage. In March 2021, the House of Representatives passed the Raise the Wage Act, which would have gradually increased the federal minimum wage to $15 per hour by 2025. However, the bill did not pass the Senate.
Some states and cities have increased their minimum wages above the federal minimum wage. As of January 2023, the following states have a minimum wage higher than the federal minimum wage:
- California: $15.50 per hour (effective January 1, 2023)
- Massachusetts: $15.00 per hour (effective January 1, 2023)
- New York: $14.20 per hour (effective December 31, 2022)
- New Jersey: $14.13 per hour (effective January 1, 2023)
- Illinois: $13.00 per hour (effective January 1, 2023)
- Connecticut: $13.00 per hour (effective January 1, 2023)
- Maryland: $12.50 per hour (effective January 1, 2023)

- Florida: $11.00 per hour (effective January 1, 2023)
- Michigan: $10.10 per hour (effective January 1, 2023)

- Vermont: $10.00 per hour (effective January 1, 2023)
- Washington, D.C.: $15.00 per hour (effective July 1, 2022)
Some cities and counties also have their own minimum wage laws. For example:
- Seattle, Washington: $16.39 per hour (effective January 1, 2023)
- San Francisco, California: $16.32 per hour (effective January 1, 2023)
- Los Angeles, California: $15.00 per hour (effective July 1, 2022)
- New York City, New York: $15.00 per hour (effective December 31, 2022)
- Chicago, Illinois: $14.00 per hour (effective July 1, 2022)
- Boston, Massachusetts: $14.00 per hour (effective January 1, 2023)
It's worth noting that some states and cities have also implemented automatic cost-of-living adjustments (COLAs) to their minimum wages, which means that the minimum wage will increase annually based on inflation.
