Genesis 40
The Dreams of the Cupbearer and the Baker
1 Some time later, the cupbearer and the baker of the king of Egypt had offended their lord, the king. 2 Pharaoh was angry with his two officials, the chief cupbearer and the chief baker, 3 and put them in the prison where the royal guards were held. The Pharaoh was angry with them for something they had done. 4 The chief cupbearer and the chief baker were put in the same prison cell. 5 One night, while they were in prison, each of them had a dream. Each dream had its own special meaning. 6 When they woke up, they were confused and didn't know what their dreams meant. So they said to each other, "We've had strange dreams. There must be someone who can tell us what they mean." 7 One of them, the chief cupbearer, said to the other, "I had a dream. I saw a vine with three branches. On the branches were grapes, ripe and ready to be picked. 8 I was holding the vine and pulled it up to Pharaoh's palace. I gave it to him to drink, and he drank it all up." 9 The other official, the chief baker, said, "I had a dream too. I saw three baskets of white bread on my head. 10 In the top basket were all kinds of baked goods for Pharaoh, but the birds were eating them from the basket on my head." 11 When they told their dreams to each other, each one knew that the other's dream was about something bad. 12 The chief cupbearer said to the chief baker, "We've had bad dreams. I had a dream about a vine and grapes, and you had a dream about three baskets of bread. 13 We both know that these dreams are about something bad, and we're in prison because of something we did wrong." 14 One night, while they were in prison, Joseph, who was a prisoner with them, came to them. He was a Hebrew, and the chief cupbearer and the chief baker told him their dreams. 15 Joseph said to them, "I can tell you what your dreams mean. God has shown me what they mean, and I will tell you." 16 The chief cupbearer told Joseph his dream first. Joseph said, "You had a dream about a vine with three branches. The three branches are three days. 17 In three days Pharaoh will lift your head off your shoulders and hang you on a tree. Then the birds will come and eat the flesh from your eyes and your head." 18 The chief cupbearer said to Joseph, "Only God can give you such wisdom. Tell me what my dream means, and I will remember you and do something good for you when I am free." 19 Joseph said, "I will remember you and do something good for you when I am free. But remember me when you are free, and do something good for me." 20 The chief baker said to Joseph, "I had a dream too. I saw three baskets of white bread on my head. 21 In the top basket were all kinds of baked goods for Pharaoh, but the birds were eating them from the basket on my head." 22 Joseph said, "This is what your dream means. The three baskets are three days. 23 In three days Pharaoh will hang your head off a tree and kill you. The birds will come and eat your flesh from your eyes and your head." 24 The third day was the day Pharaoh's birthday. He gave a big feast for all his officials, and he put the chief cupbearer and the chief baker in front of him. 25 Pharaoh lifted the head of the chief cupbearer off his shoulders and put it back on again. Then Pharaoh gave him a new cup to carry, and he was free to go back to his work as the king's cupbearer. 26 But Pharaoh had the chief baker killed, just as Joseph had said he would be killed.
