Fight Real Perceived Corrupt Practices in Judicial System, Buhari Tasks Judiciary

President Muhammadu Buhari has charged the judiciary to take a decisive stand against corrupt practices in the system, saying that the fight against corruption is a collective responsibility that requires the cooperation of all arms of government.

Speaking at the opening of the 2019/2020 legal year of the Supreme Court, Buhari emphasized that the judiciary has a crucial role to play in the fight against corruption, adding that the perception of corruption in the system is a major obstacle to the country's development.

The President noted that while the executive arm of government has made significant progress in the fight against corruption, the judiciary has a critical role to play in ensuring that those found guilty of corrupt practices are brought to justice.

"We must all work together to ensure that the judiciary is not only independent but also impartial and free from corrupt influences," Buhari said.

The President also commended the judiciary for its efforts in promoting the rule of law and upholding the constitution, saying that the judiciary has been a beacon of hope for many Nigerians.

However, he noted that there is still much work to be done to address the perception of corruption in the system, adding that the judiciary must take a decisive stand against corrupt practices.

"We must not only condemn corruption but also take concrete steps to prevent it," Buhari said.

The President also called on the judiciary to take steps to improve access to justice, saying that many Nigerians are unable to access justice due to the high cost of litigation and other barriers.

"We must make justice accessible to all, regardless of their social status or economic circumstances," Buhari said.

The President's speech was received with applause by the judges and other stakeholders in the judiciary.
