Fifa new rules starting next season
FIFA has introduced several new rules and changes to the Laws of the Game that will come into effect starting from the 2022-23 season. Here are some of the key changes:
- Video Assistant Referees (VARs): VARs will now be used to review all penalty decisions, not just those that are deemed "clear and obvious" errors.
- Handball: The definition of handball has been changed to make it clearer when a handball is considered deliberate. The new rule states that a handball is considered deliberate if the player "ends the play with their hand or arm, or makes contact with the ball with their hand or arm, or makes contact with the ball with their hand or arm in a way that is not necessary to play the ball."
- Offside: The offside rule has been changed to make it clearer when a player is considered offside. The new rule states that a player is considered offside if any part of their body (including their head, arms, and legs) is closer to the opponent's goal line than both the ball and the second-to-last opponent when the ball is played forward.
- Substitutions: Teams will now be allowed to make a maximum of three substitutions per match, with the option to make additional substitutions in extra time if the match goes to extra time.
- Goalkeeper Handball: Goalkeepers will no longer be allowed to handle the ball with their hands if it has been deliberately kicked to them by a teammate using their feet.
- Direct Free Kicks: The rules around direct free kicks have been changed to make it clearer when a player is considered to be "unsporting behavior" and can be given a yellow or red card.
- Yellow and Red Cards: The rules around yellow and red cards have been changed to make it clearer when a player can be given a yellow or red card for unsporting behavior.
- Fouls: The rules around fouls have been changed to make it clearer when a foul is considered "serious foul play" and can result in a red card.
- Injury Time: The rules around injury time have been changed to make it clearer when injury time should be added to the end of the match.
- Match Ball: The rules around the match ball have been changed to make it clearer when a ball is considered "defective" and must be replaced.
These are just some of the key changes that will come into effect starting from the 2022-23 season.
