Fg position on new minimum wage
The Federal Government (FG) of Nigeria has not officially announced a new minimum wage. However, there have been ongoing negotiations between the FG and the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) to increase the minimum wage.
In 2019, the FG increased the minimum wage from N18,000 to N30,000, which was implemented in April 2020. However, the NLC has been pushing for a further increase, citing the rising cost of living and the need to ensure a decent standard of living for workers.
In 2022, the FG set up a committee to review the minimum wage, which is expected to submit its report soon. The committee is chaired by the Minister of Labour and Employment, Dr. Chris Ngige, and has representatives from the FG, the NLC, and other stakeholders.
While there is no official announcement on a new minimum wage, there have been reports that the FG is considering increasing the minimum wage to between N40,000 and N50,000. However, these reports are yet to be confirmed.
It's worth noting that the FG has also introduced other initiatives to support workers, such as the National Social Investment Programme (NSIP), which provides financial support to vulnerable groups, including workers.
