The Federal Government of Nigeria has introduced a new salary structure for its employees, effective from January 2020. The new structure is designed to improve the welfare of federal civil servants and align with the current economic realities in the country.

The new salary structure has 17 grade levels, with the following salary ranges:

  3. GL 11 - GL 14: N120,000 - N240,000 per month
  4. GL 15 - GL 17: N240,000 - N500,000 per month

Salary Increases

The new salary structure provides for a significant increase in salaries for federal civil servants. The increases range from 20% to 100% depending on the grade level.

Allowances

In addition to the basic salary, federal civil servants will also receive the following allowances:

  1. Housing Allowance: 20% of basic salary
  2. Transport Allowance: 10% of basic salary
  3. Uniform Allowance: 5% of basic salary
  4. Danger Allowance: 10% of basic salary (for employees working in hazardous environments)
  5. Hardship Allowance: 10% of basic salary (for employees working in remote or difficult-to-reach areas)

Other Benefits

Federal civil servants will also enjoy other benefits, including:

  1. Annual Leave: 20 working days per year
  2. Sick Leave: 30 working days per year
  3. Maternity Leave: 12 weeks per year (for female employees)
  4. Paternity Leave: 3 days per year (for male employees)
  5. Pension Scheme: The federal government will contribute 12% of an employee's basic salary to the pension scheme.

Implementation

The new salary structure is expected to be implemented in phases, with the first phase covering employees in the Ministry of Finance, Budget and National Planning, and the Office of the Head of Service of the Federation.

Timeline

The implementation timeline for the new salary structure is as follows:

  1. January 2020: Implementation of the new salary structure for employees in the Ministry of Finance, Budget and National Planning, and the Office of the Head of Service of the Federation.
  2. April 2020: Implementation of the new salary structure for employees in other ministries, departments, and agencies (MDAs).
  3. July 2020: Implementation of the new salary structure for employees in the judiciary and the legislature.
