Fashola Praises 6,619MW Power Generation Capacity, Promises to Solve Distribution Problems

The Minister of Power, Works and Housing, Mr. Babatunde Fashola, has commended the Federal Government's efforts in increasing the country's power generation capacity to 6,619 megawatts (MW).

Fashola made the commendation while speaking at a stakeholders' meeting in Abuja, where he assured that the government is working to address the challenges of power distribution in the country.

"We have increased power generation to 6,619MW, which is a significant improvement from where we were in 2015. We are working to ensure that the power generated is distributed efficiently and effectively to the end-users," Fashola said.

The minister attributed the increase in power generation to the efforts of the government in rehabilitating and expanding the nation's power infrastructure, including the completion of several power projects.

He also assured that the government is working to address the challenges of power distribution, including the issue of transmission and distribution losses.

"We are working to reduce transmission and distribution losses, which have been a major challenge in the power sector. We are also working to improve the efficiency of the distribution companies to ensure that power is delivered to the end-users," Fashola said.

The minister also commended the efforts of the Distribution Companies (DISCOs) in improving their performance, saying that they have made significant progress in reducing their technical, commercial and collection losses.

"We are working with the DISCOs to ensure that they continue to improve their performance and deliver power to the end-users. We are also working to ensure that the power sector is privatized in a way that is beneficial to all stakeholders," Fashola said.

The meeting was attended by stakeholders in the power sector, including the DISCOs, the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN), and the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC).
