Rome, 24 February 2023 - The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations and the European Union (EU) have signed a new agreement to support sustainable agriculture in Africa. The agreement aims to improve food security, reduce poverty, and promote sustainable agriculture practices in the region.

The agreement, worth €15 million, will support FAO's work in Africa over the next three years, focusing on areas such as sustainable agriculture, food security, and rural development. The EU's funding will also support FAO's efforts to promote climate-resilient agriculture, improve agricultural productivity, and enhance the livelihoods of small-scale farmers and rural communities.

"This agreement is a significant step forward in our partnership with the European Union to support sustainable agriculture in Africa," said FAO Director-General Qu Dongyu. "We are committed to working together to address the challenges facing the agriculture sector in Africa, including climate change, poverty, and food insecurity."

The agreement will also support FAO's work in promoting sustainable agriculture practices, such as agroecology, which aims to promote environmentally friendly farming practices that prioritize soil health, biodiversity, and ecosystem services.

"We are proud to support FAO's work in Africa, which is critical to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and ensuring that everyone has access to nutritious food," said EU Commissioner for International Cooperation and Development, Jutta Urpilainen. "This agreement demonstrates the EU's commitment to supporting sustainable agriculture and rural development in Africa."

The agreement was signed by FAO Director-General Qu Dongyu and EU Commissioner for International Cooperation and Development, Jutta Urpilainen, at a ceremony in Rome.
