Lagos, Nigeria - In a thrilling finale, Lagos State has emerged the winner of the 5th Lafarge Africa National Literacy Competition, held at the Eko Hotel and Suites, Victoria Island, Lagos.

The competition, which was organized by Lafarge Africa Plc, in partnership with the Federal Ministry of Education, aimed to promote literacy and numeracy skills among primary school pupils across Nigeria.

The Lagos State team, comprising 10 students from various public and private schools, demonstrated exceptional literacy and numeracy skills, outshining teams from other states to clinch the top spot.

The winning team, led by their teacher, Mrs. Oluwaseun Adeyemi, was presented with a cash prize of N1 million, a trophy, and a certificate of participation.

The Lafarge Africa National Literacy Competition is an annual event that has been promoting literacy and numeracy skills among Nigerian children since 2016. The competition has become a benchmark for measuring the literacy levels of primary school pupils in Nigeria.

The competition was judged by a panel of experts, who assessed the students' reading, writing, and numeracy skills, as well as their ability to solve problems and think critically.

The Minister of Education, Mallam Adamu Adamu, who was the guest of honor at the event, commended Lafarge Africa Plc for its commitment to promoting literacy and education in Nigeria.

"We are grateful to Lafarge Africa Plc for this initiative, which has helped to identify and reward outstanding students in literacy and numeracy," the Minister said.

The Managing Director of Lafarge Africa Plc, Mr. Khaled El Koksh, said the company was proud to be associated with the competition, which has become a flagship program for promoting literacy and education in Nigeria.

"We are committed to supporting education in Nigeria, and this competition is a testament to our commitment to empowering Nigerian children to become literate and numerate," Mr. El Koksh said.

The winning team from Lagos State will represent Nigeria at the International Literacy Competition, which will be held in the United States later this year.
