Eobard Thawne, also known as Professor Zoom, is a supervillain in the DC Comics universe. In the New 52 continuity, which was launched in 2011, Eobard Thawne's backstory and character were reimagined.

In the New 52, Eobard Thawne is a brilliant scientist who becomes obsessed with the Flash, Barry Allen. He is a former student of Barry's mentor, Professor Martin Stein, and is jealous of Barry's success and recognition. Eobard becomes a rival to Barry, using his intelligence and technology to try and outdo him.

Eobard's origin story in the New 52 is that he was a brilliant but arrogant student who was obsessed with the concept of time travel. He becomes obsessed with the idea of meeting his idol, the Flash, and eventually discovers a way to travel back in time. However, his attempts to meet the Flash are thwarted, and he becomes stuck in the past, reliving the same moments over and over again.
