Education sector receives n33 billion out of 2017 budget
According to the 2017 budget of the Federal Government of Nigeria, the education sector received a total allocation of N33 billion.
Here's a breakdown of the allocation:
- Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC): N19.8 billion
- Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFUND): N6.2 billion
- National Commission for Colleges of Education (NCCE): N1.4 billion
- National Teachers' Institute (NTI): N1.1 billion
- National Board for Technical Education (NBTE): N1.1 billion
- National Commission for Mass Literacy, Adult and Non-Formal Education (NCMLA): N1.1 billion
- Other education-related agencies: N1.3 billion
It's worth noting that the allocation to the education sector in the 2017 budget was a significant increase from the previous year's allocation of N22.9 billion. However, the allocation was still below the recommended 26% of the total budget, which is the international benchmark for education spending.
Despite the increase in allocation, the education sector in Nigeria still faces numerous challenges, including inadequate infrastructure, poor teacher morale, and limited access to quality education, particularly in rural areas.
