Ecclesiastes 9 new living translation

Here is Ecclesiastes 9 in the New Living Translation (NLT):

9 For the fate of humans is like that of the animals; the same fate awaits them both: As one dies, so dies the other. All have the same breath; humans have no advantage over animals. Everything is meaningless.

2 All go to the same place; all come from dust, and to dust all return.

3 Who knows if the human spirit is even in the breath of living beings?

4 But there is something they have all in common: though they are all mighty, yet the breath of living beings is the same to them.

5 The breath of all living beings is the same, whether humans or animals; they all come from the Lord.

6 The same fate awaits the righteous and the wicked, for the days of all who have been born are numbered.

7 All human accomplishments are like a breath of air. On one day everything is in order; by the next day it is in disarray. What does it all add up to?

8 The wise may think they can win the battle of life, but the foolish may have the same fate as they.

9 The fate of the fool is to be foolish, and the fate of the wise is to be wise.

10 Whatever is has already been, and what will be has already been; everything is written in the book of fate.

11 The human mind is unable to comprehend the mystery of God, just as the heavens are higher than the earth.

12 I know that there is nothing better for people than to be happy and to do good while they live.

13 And also that everyone should eat and drink and find joy in all their hard work, for these are gifts from God.

14 I know that everything God does will endure forever; nothing can be added to it and nothing taken from it. God has done this so that people will fear him.

15 Whatever is has already been, and what will be has already been; everything is written in the book of fate.
