Dapchi girls air force deploys air assets rescue operation
You're referring to the Dapchi Schoolgirls Abduction and Rescue Operation!
On February 19, 2018, over 100 schoolgirls were abducted from the Government Girls Science and Technical College in Dapchi, Yobe State, Nigeria. The abduction was carried out by Boko Haram terrorists.
In response to the crisis, the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) deployed air assets to support a rescue operation. The operation, code-named "Operation Crackdown," aimed to rescue the abducted girls and neutralize the terrorist group.
The NAF deployed various air assets, including:
- Alpha Jets: These are twin-engine jet fighters designed for ground attack and reconnaissance missions.
- Mi-35M Helicopters: These are attack helicopters capable of conducting precision strikes and transporting troops.
- EC-135 Helicopters: These are multi-role helicopters used for transport, medical evacuation, and reconnaissance.
On March 21, 2018, the NAF launched a rescue operation, which involved the deployment of these air assets. The operation was carried out in coordination with ground troops from the Nigerian Army and other security agencies.
During the operation, the NAF air assets provided close air support to the ground troops, conducting precision strikes against Boko Haram positions and providing reconnaissance and surveillance to identify the location of the abducted girls.
On March 23, 2018, the NAF announced that it had rescued 105 of the abducted schoolgirls, with 104 of them being returned to their families. The remaining girl was later found and reunited with her family.
The successful rescue operation was a testament to the bravery and professionalism of the Nigerian Air Force and other security agencies involved. It also highlighted the importance of air power in modern warfare, particularly in counter-terrorism operations.
