D.r congo tshisekedi sworn in as new president
A significant event in African politics!
On January 24, 2019, Félix Tshisekedi Tshilombo, commonly known as Félix Tshisekedi, was sworn in as the new President of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). He succeeded Joseph Kabila, who had been in power since 2001.
Tshisekedi, a 55-year-old opposition leader, won the presidential election held on December 30, 2018, with 38% of the vote. The election was marred by allegations of fraud and irregularities, but the results were certified by the Independent National Electoral Commission (CENI).
Tshisekedi's inauguration marked a significant turning point in the DRC's political history, as it was the first peaceful transfer of power since the country gained independence from Belgium in 1960. The event was attended by dignitaries from across Africa and the world, including the African Union Commission Chairperson, Moussa Faki Mahamat, and the European Union's High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Federica Mogherini.
As President, Tshisekedi faces numerous challenges, including:
- Rebuilding the country's economy, which has been plagued by corruption, poverty, and instability.
- Addressing the ongoing conflict in the eastern regions of the DRC, where various armed groups have been fighting for control.
- Improving the country's infrastructure, including roads, healthcare, and education.
- Strengthening democratic institutions and ensuring transparency and accountability in government.
Tshisekedi has promised to work towards these goals and to prioritize the welfare of the Congolese people. His presidency is closely watched by the international community, which hopes that he will bring stability and prosperity to the DRC.
