UNICEF Warns Nigerians to Seek Information on Coronavirus from Trusted Sources
The United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) has cautioned Nigerians to seek information on the coronavirus (COVID-19) from trusted sources to avoid spreading misinformation and panic.
In a statement issued on Monday, UNICEF Nigeria Representative, Peter Hawkins, urged Nigerians to verify information on the virus from credible sources, such as the World Health Organization (WHO), the Nigerian Centre for Disease Control (NCDC), and the Ministry of Health.
"UNICEF is concerned about the spread of misinformation and panic related to the COVID-19 pandemic in Nigeria," Hawkins said. "We urge Nigerians to seek information from trusted sources, such as the WHO, NCDC, and the Ministry of Health, to ensure that they have accurate and reliable information about the virus."
Hawkins noted that misinformation and panic can lead to unnecessary fear, stigma, and harm to individuals and communities. He emphasized the importance of seeking information from credible sources to ensure that Nigerians have accurate and reliable information about the virus.
UNICEF also urged Nigerians to follow the guidelines and advice provided by the Nigerian government and health authorities to prevent the spread of the virus.
The statement reads in part: "UNICEF is working closely with the Nigerian government and other partners to support the country's response to the COVID-19 pandemic. We are providing technical assistance, supplies, and funding to support the country's efforts to prevent the spread of the virus and protect the health and well-being of Nigerians."
