Copa del rey 2020 new rules
The Copa del Rey 2020-21 season introduced some new rules and changes to the competition format. Here are some of the key changes:
- Increased number of teams: The Copa del Rey now features 126 teams, up from 123 in the previous season. This is due to the promotion of more teams from the Segunda División B to the Segunda División.
- New format for the group stage: The group stage has been replaced by a single-elimination format, with 64 teams competing in a knockout phase. The matches will be played in a neutral venue, and the winners will advance to the next round.
- Away goals rule: The away goals rule has been abolished, and the team that scores the most goals in the two-legged tie will advance to the next round.
- Extra time and penalties: If the score is level after the two-legged tie, the match will go to extra time. If the score is still level after extra time, the match will be decided by a penalty shootout.
- Increased prize money: The prize money for the Copa del Rey has been increased, with the winner receiving €3.5 million and the runner-up receiving €1.5 million.
- Changes to the scheduling: The Copa del Rey matches will be played on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, with the exception of the final, which will be played on a Saturday.
- Increased use of VAR: The Copa del Rey will use Video Assistant Referee (VAR) technology to help referees make decisions, particularly in regards to goals, penalties, and direct red cards.
- New rules for substitutions: Teams will be allowed to make a maximum of three substitutions per match, with the exception of the final, which will allow for a maximum of four substitutions.
These changes aim to improve the competition and make it more exciting for fans, while also providing more opportunities for teams from lower divisions to compete against top-tier teams.
