Consequence news value
A crucial aspect of journalism!
Consequence refers to the potential impact or outcome of a news story. It's the significance or importance of the event or issue being reported. In other words, what are the potential consequences of the news story for the individuals, communities, or society as a whole?
News value, on the other hand, is a set of criteria used to evaluate the importance or relevance of a news story. It's a way to determine whether a story is newsworthy or not. The five traditional news values are:
- Impact: How significant is the story? Will it affect a large number of people or have a significant impact on society?
- Uniqueness: Is the story unusual or unexpected? Does it break new ground or challenge existing norms?
- Proximity: Is the story local or relevant to the audience? Does it affect people in the same community or region?
- Prominence: Is the story about a well-known person, organization, or institution? Does it involve someone or something that is already in the public eye?
- Timeliness: Is the story timely and relevant to current events or issues? Does it have a sense of urgency or importance?
When evaluating a news story, journalists consider both the consequence and news value. They ask themselves:
- What are the potential consequences of this story for the individuals or communities involved?
- How significant is the story in terms of its impact, uniqueness, proximity, prominence, and timeliness?
- Is the story newsworthy based on these criteria?
By considering both consequence and news value, journalists can determine whether a story is worth reporting and how to prioritize their coverage.
