Commandments repeated in the new testament
While the New Testament does not repeat the exact same commandments as the Old Testament, it does contain teachings and principles that are similar or identical to the Ten Commandments. Here are some examples:
- Love God with all your heart, soul, mind, and strength (Mark 12:30, Deuteronomy 6:5) - This is similar to the first commandment, "You shall have no other gods before Me" (Exodus 20:3).
- Love your neighbor as yourself (Mark 12:31, Leviticus 19:18) - This is similar to the second commandment, "You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain" (Exodus 20:7).
- Do not murder (Matthew 5:21, Exodus 20:13) - This is identical to the sixth commandment.
- Do not commit adultery (Matthew 5:27, Exodus 20:17) - This is identical to the seventh commandment.
- Do not steal (Matthew 19:18, Exodus 20:15) - This is identical to the eighth commandment.
- Do not bear false witness (Matthew 19:18, Exodus 20:16) - This is identical to the ninth commandment.
- Do not covet (Matthew 5:28, Exodus 20:17) - This is similar to the tenth commandment, "You shall not covet anything that belongs to your neighbor" (Exodus 20:17).
Additionally, the New Testament contains teachings that are similar to the Old Testament commandments, such as:
- Respect for parents (Ephesians 6:1-3, Exodus 20:12)
- Honor for authority (Romans 13:1-7, Exodus 20:12)
- Keeping the Sabbath (Hebrews 4:9-11, Exodus 20:8-11)
- Giving to the poor (Matthew 25:31-46, Deuteronomy 15:7-11)
- Prayer and worship (Matthew 6:5-15, Exodus 20:3-5)
It's worth noting that while the New Testament does not repeat the exact same commandments as the Old Testament, it does build upon and expand the teachings of the Old Testament. The New Testament emphasizes the importance of loving God and others, and living a life that is pleasing to God.
