Typhoon Ompong makes landfall in Philippines, brings heavy rain and strong winds

Typhoon Ompong, the 15th storm to hit the Philippines this year, made landfall on Tuesday morning, bringing heavy rain and strong winds to the eastern part of the country.

According to the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA), Ompong made landfall at 4:30 am local time (8:30 pm ET Monday) in the province of Dinapigue, Isabela, with maximum sustained winds of 140 km/h (87 mph) and gusts of up to 170 km/h (106 mph).

The storm is expected to bring heavy rain and strong winds to the eastern part of Luzon, including the provinces of Isabela, Nueva Vizcaya, Quirino, and Aurora, as well as the National Capital Region (NCR).

Evacuations underway

PAGASA has issued a red alert, the highest level of alert, for the provinces of Isabela, Nueva Vizcaya, Quirino, and Aurora, as well as the NCR.

Evacuations are underway in several areas, with over 10,000 people already moved to safer locations. The Philippine National Police has deployed personnel to assist in the evacuation efforts.

Floods and landslides feared

The storm is expected to bring heavy rain, which could lead to floods and landslides in low-lying areas. The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) has warned of possible flash floods and landslides in areas with steep terrain.

International assistance offered

The Philippine government has accepted offers of assistance from neighboring countries, including Japan, South Korea, and China.
