Clamp down on illegal varsities afe babalola tells nuc

Afe Babalola, a renowned Nigerian lawyer and educationist, has called on the National Universities Commission (NUC) to clamp down on illegal universities operating in the country.

Babalola, who is the founder of Afe Babalola University (ABUAD), made the call while speaking at the 2022 convocation ceremony of the University of Lagos (UNILAG).

According to him, the proliferation of illegal universities is a threat to the quality of education in Nigeria and the country's overall development.

"I want to appeal to the National Universities Commission to take a firm stance against these illegal universities. They are a menace to our education system and a threat to the future of our children," Babalola said.

He noted that the proliferation of illegal universities has led to a situation where many graduates are not employable, as they lack the necessary skills and knowledge.

Babalola also called on the government to provide adequate funding for education, saying that this is necessary to ensure that universities in the country are well-equipped to provide quality education.

"I want to appeal to the government to provide adequate funding for education. This is necessary to ensure that our universities are well-equipped to provide quality education. We cannot continue to rely on private individuals and organizations to fund our education system," he said.

The NUC has been criticized in the past for its inability to effectively regulate the proliferation of illegal universities in the country. Many of these universities are said to be operating without proper accreditation, leading to concerns about the quality of education they provide.

In recent years, there have been several cases of graduates from these illegal universities being unable to find employment, as their degrees are not recognized by employers.

The NUC has said that it is working to address the issue of illegal universities, but many have criticized the commission for not doing enough to stop the proliferation of these institutions.

It is hoped that Babalola's call will lead to a renewed effort by the NUC to clamp down on illegal universities and ensure that only reputable institutions are allowed to operate in the country.
