China warns trump against ignoring its taiwan interests
China has warned US President Donald Trump against ignoring its interests in Taiwan, amid growing tensions between the two countries over trade, security, and the South China Sea.
In a statement released on Tuesday, China's Foreign Ministry said that Taiwan is a "sensitive and important" issue for China, and that any attempts to ignore its interests would be "unacceptable".
The statement came after Trump signed a bill last week that encourages the US to provide Taiwan with defensive weapons, despite China's opposition. The bill also requires the US to report to Congress on any arms sales to Taiwan.
China has long claimed sovereignty over Taiwan, which it considers a breakaway province. The US, on the other hand, has maintained unofficial relations with Taiwan since the 1970s and has provided it with military aid.
The Chinese Foreign Ministry statement said that the US should "respect China's sovereignty and territorial integrity" and not "undermine" the "one-China principle", which is the basis for China's relations with Taiwan.
The statement also warned that any attempts to "ignore" China's interests in Taiwan would "seriously damage" relations between the two countries.
The warning comes as tensions between the US and China have been escalating over a range of issues, including trade, security, and the South China Sea. The US has been critical of China's military buildup in the South China Sea, which it claims is a threat to regional stability.
In recent weeks, the US has also been increasing its military presence in the region, with the deployment of aircraft carriers and warships to the South China Sea.
The Chinese Foreign Ministry statement also came as Trump is set to meet with Chinese President Xi Jinping at the G20 summit in Osaka, Japan, later this month. The meeting is expected to focus on trade and security issues, but the statement suggests that Taiwan will also be on the agenda.
The US has been trying to balance its relations with China and Taiwan, but the issue is sensitive and complex. The US has a long-standing commitment to Taiwan's security, but it also wants to maintain good relations with China.
The situation is likely to remain tense in the coming weeks and months, as the US and China continue to negotiate on trade and security issues.
