Buhari stand on new minimum wage in nigeria 2018
In 2018, the Nigerian government, led by President Muhammadu Buhari, increased the national minimum wage from N18,000 to N30,000. This was after a long-standing demand by workers and labor unions for a review of the minimum wage.
In October 2018, the Tripartite Committee on Minimum Wage, comprising representatives of the government, labor unions, and the private sector, submitted its report to President Buhari, recommending a new minimum wage of N30,000.
On April 18, 2019, President Buhari signed the new minimum wage bill into law, increasing the national minimum wage from N18,000 to N30,000. The new wage was effective from April 18, 2019.
In his speech while signing the bill, President Buhari said: "I am pleased to announce that the Federal Government has accepted the recommendation of the Tripartite Committee on Minimum Wage. We have also agreed that the new minimum wage will be effective from April 18, 2019."
The new minimum wage was seen as a significant step towards improving the welfare of Nigerian workers, who had been demanding a review of the minimum wage for several years. The increase was also expected to boost the economy and reduce poverty.
However, the implementation of the new minimum wage has been slow, with some states and local governments yet to implement the new wage.
