Speech by President Muhammadu Buhari on the New Minimum Wage
Fellow Nigerians,
I am pleased to address you today on a matter of great importance to our nation and its citizens. As you are aware, the issue of a new minimum wage has been a subject of intense debate and negotiation between the Federal Government and the organized labour movement.
After careful consideration and consultation with stakeholders, I am pleased to announce that we have reached a consensus on a new minimum wage for the country. The new minimum wage is N30,000 per month.
This decision is a testament to the commitment of this administration to the welfare and well-being of Nigerian workers. We recognize the importance of a living wage in ensuring the dignity and prosperity of our citizens.
The new minimum wage is a significant increase from the current N18,000 per month, and it reflects the government's determination to improve the standard of living of Nigerian workers. We believe that this increase will have a positive impact on the economy, as it will inject more money into the system and stimulate economic activity.
I want to commend the leadership of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) for their tireless efforts in pushing for a new minimum wage. I also want to acknowledge the contributions of the National Assembly, particularly the Senate and the House of Representatives, for their support and guidance throughout the process.
The implementation of the new minimum wage will be done in a phased manner, with the first phase focusing on the payment of the new wage to federal civil servants. We will work with the states and the local governments to ensure that they also implement the new wage structure.
I want to assure Nigerian workers that this administration is committed to their welfare and well-being. We will continue to work towards creating a conducive environment for them to thrive and contribute to the growth and development of our nation.
In conclusion, I want to express my gratitude to all Nigerians who have contributed to this process. I believe that the new minimum wage is a significant step towards improving the lives of our citizens and promoting national prosperity.
Thank you, and may God bless Nigeria.
