Breaking olisa metuh found guilty of laundering n400m
Olisa Metuh, a former National Publicity Secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has been found guilty of laundering N400 million.
According to reports, Metuh was arraigned before the Federal High Court in Abuja on January 13, 2016, on a 7-count charge of money laundering and corruption. The charges were brought against him by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
The EFCC alleged that Metuh received N400 million from the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA) in 2014, which was meant for the purchase of arms for the military. However, Metuh allegedly used the money for personal purposes, including the purchase of a property in Abuja.
After a lengthy trial, Justice Okon Abang of the Federal High Court in Abuja delivered a verdict on February 25, 2020, finding Metuh guilty of all the charges brought against him.
The judge held that the prosecution had successfully proved its case against Metuh, and that he had failed to prove his innocence. Metuh was subsequently sentenced to 7 years imprisonment for each of the 7 counts, with the sentences to run concurrently.
The EFCC had also recovered N400 million from Metuh, which was the same amount he was alleged to have laundered. The recovered funds were subsequently returned to the Federal Government.
Metuh's conviction is seen as a major victory for the EFCC in its efforts to combat corruption in Nigeria. It is also a significant blow to the PDP, which has been plagued by corruption allegations in recent years.
It is worth noting that Metuh has maintained his innocence throughout the trial, and has vowed to appeal the verdict. However, the conviction and sentence have sent a strong message that corruption will not be tolerated in Nigeria, and that those who engage in it will be held accountable.
