Breaking: Fayemi picks APC ticket, floors Oni
Ado-Ekiti—The All Progressives Congress (APC) has cleared Dr. Kayode Fayemi, a former Governor of Ekiti State, to fly the party's flag in the July 14 governorship election in the state.
Fayemi, who was the party's candidate in the 2018 governorship election, emerged winner of the APC primary election held at the Ekiti State University (EKSU) campus, Ado-Ekiti, on Tuesday.
The former Minister of Mines and Steel Development polled 1,162 votes to defeat his closest rival, Senator Abiodun Olujimi, who scored 734 votes.
Another aspirant, Senator Opeyemi Bamidele, scored 242 votes, while a former Speaker of the Ekiti State House of Assembly, Dr. Adeniyi Adebayo, scored 143 votes.
The APC primary election was characterized by a high level of enthusiasm and excitement, as supporters of the various aspirants thronged the EKSU campus to cheer their candidates.
Fayemi, who was declared winner of the primary election by the APC National Chairman, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole, thanked the party's delegates for their support and promised to work hard to win the governorship election.
"I want to thank the delegates for their support and confidence in me. I promise to work hard to win the election and make Ekiti State proud," Fayemi said.
The APC primary election was monitored by officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), the Department of State Services (DSS), and the Nigeria Police Force.
The outcome of the primary election has been welcomed by many APC stakeholders in the state, who see Fayemi as a strong candidate capable of winning the governorship election.
Fayemi's victory has also been hailed by many political analysts, who believe that his experience as a former Governor and Minister will be an asset in the governorship election.
The APC governorship primary election was the second to be held in the state, following the earlier primary election held by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), which produced Mr. Bisi Kolawole as its candidate.
The Ekiti State governorship election is scheduled to hold on July 14, 2022.
