Breaking: Suswam Docked Over Alleged N3.1bn Fraud

Former Governor of Benue State, Gabriel Suswam, has been docked by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) over alleged fraud to the tune of N3.1 billion.

Suswam, who is facing a 32-count charge, was arraigned before Justice Ahmed Ramat Mohammed of the Federal High Court in Abuja on Monday.

The EFCC alleged that Suswam, while serving as Governor of Benue State from 2007 to 2015, diverted public funds meant for the development of the state to personal use.

The anti-graft agency claimed that Suswam, in collusion with others, misappropriated N3.1 billion from the state's treasury, which was meant for the payment of salaries, pensions, and other public expenditures.

The EFCC also alleged that Suswam used the diverted funds to purchase properties, including a N200 million mansion in Abuja, and to fund his political campaigns.

Suswam, who was represented by his lawyer, Mike Ozekhome (SAN), pleaded not guilty to the charges.

The judge, Justice Mohammed, adjourned the case to February 24, 2023, for further hearing.

The EFCC is seeking to recover the allegedly diverted funds and to punish Suswam for his alleged role in the fraud.

This is not the first time Suswam has been accused of corruption. In 2015, he was arrested by the EFCC over allegations of corruption and money laundering, but he was later granted bail.

The case is ongoing, and it remains to be seen how it will unfold.
