Title: "A New Life in Christ"

Text: Ephesians 2:1-10

Introduction:

Have you ever felt like you're stuck in a rut? Like you're going through the motions of life, but feeling empty and unfulfilled inside? Maybe you've tried to find happiness and purpose in things like wealth, success, or relationships, but they just haven't delivered. Well, today I want to tell you that there is a way out of that rut, a way to experience a new life that is full of hope, joy, and purpose.

The Old Life

In Ephesians 2:1-3, the apostle Paul describes the life we lived before we came to know Christ. He says, "You were dead in your transgressions and sins, in which you used to live when you followed the ways of this world and of the ruler of the kingdom of the air, the spirit who is now at work in those who are disobedient. All of us also lived among them at one time, gratifying the cravings of our flesh and following its desires and thoughts. Like the rest, we were by nature deserving of wrath."

This is the life we lived before we came to know Christ. It's a life of sin, rebellion, and separation from God. We were dead in our sins, unable to do anything to change our own condition. We were slaves to our own desires and fleshly appetites, and we were headed for eternal destruction.

The New Life

But then, in verse 4, Paul says, "But because of his great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy, made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in transgressions—it is by grace you have been saved." This is the moment when we were born again, when we received new life in Christ. We were made alive with Christ, and we were given a new heart, a new spirit, and a new purpose.

In verse 5, Paul says, "And God raised us up with Christ and seated us with him in the heavenly realms in Christ Jesus." This is the new life we have in Christ. We are no longer slaves to our own desires and fleshly appetites. We are seated with Christ in the heavenly realms, where we have access to all the resources and blessings of God.

The Characteristics of the New Life

So what does this new life look like? In verses 8-10, Paul describes some of the characteristics of the new life. He says, "For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God—not by works, so that no one can boast. For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do."

This new life is characterized by faith, not works. We don't earn our salvation or our new life by doing good things. It's a gift from God, and we receive it by faith. And because we are God's handiwork, created in Christ Jesus, we are called to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.

Conclusion:

So if you're feeling stuck in a rut, if you're feeling empty and unfulfilled, I want to encourage you to look to Christ. He is the one who can give you a new life, a life that is full of hope, joy, and purpose. He is the one who can forgive your sins and give you a fresh start. And he is the one who can empower you to live a life that is pleasing to him.

So don't settle for the old life. Don't settle for mediocrity and emptiness. Choose the new life in Christ. Choose to follow him, to trust him, and to obey him. And you will find that you are a new creation, a new person, with a new purpose and a new passion for life.

Prayer:

Dear Lord, we thank you for the gift of new life in Christ. We thank you for forgiving our sins and giving us a fresh start. Help us to live a life that is pleasing to you, a life that is characterized by faith, not works. Help us to do good works, which you prepared in advance for us to do. And help us to experience the fullness of your joy and purpose in our lives. In Jesus' name we pray, Amen.
