Asuu declares indefinite strike

A very important and timely topic!

ASUU (Academic Staff Union of Universities) has indeed declared an indefinite strike, effective from February 14, 2022. This decision was taken after the union's National Executive Council (NEC) meeting, where they expressed their dissatisfaction with the government's failure to meet their demands.

The main reasons for the strike include:

  1. Non-payment of salaries: ASUU is demanding the payment of salaries owed to its members, particularly those who have been on strike since 2017.
  2. Non-implementation of agreements: The union is seeking the implementation of the 2009 and 2017 agreements, which include the payment of earned academic allowances, promotion arrears, and the revitalization of the university system.
  3. Poor funding: ASUU is concerned about the poor funding of universities, which has led to a decline in the quality of education and infrastructure.
  4. Non-implementation of the University Transparency and Accountability Solution (UTAS): The union is demanding the implementation of UTAS, a platform designed to improve the payment of salaries and allowances.

The strike has significant implications for the academic calendar, as it may disrupt the ongoing semester and affect the academic progress of students. The government and ASUU are expected to engage in further negotiations to resolve the issues and end the strike.
