ABIA NLC URGES FG TO ENFORCE NEW MINIMUM WAGE IMPLEMENTATION
Umuahia, Abia State - The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) in Abia State has called on the Federal Government to ensure the implementation of the new minimum wage of N30,000 per month for workers in the country.
The state chairman of NLC, Comrade Ibe Nwosu, made the call during a press conference held at the NLC secretariat in Umuahia, the state capital.
Nwosu said that the union had been pushing for the implementation of the new minimum wage since its introduction by the Federal Government in April 2020, but lamented that many states, including Abia, were yet to implement it.
He said, "We are calling on the Federal Government to ensure that all states, including Abia, implement the new minimum wage without further delay. We cannot continue to tolerate the suffering of workers who are the backbone of this country."
The NLC chairman also urged the Abia State Government to take immediate steps to implement the new minimum wage, saying that the union would not hesitate to take necessary actions if the government fails to comply with the directive.
"We have been patient enough, but we cannot continue to wait indefinitely. We urge the Abia State Government to take immediate steps to implement the new minimum wage to avoid any industrial action," Nwosu said.
The NLC chairman also commended the Federal Government for its efforts to improve the welfare of workers, but urged it to do more to address the challenges facing workers in the country.
"We appreciate the efforts of the Federal Government to improve the welfare of workers, but we urge it to do more to address the challenges facing workers, including the issue of minimum wage," Nwosu said.
The NLC has been at the forefront of the campaign for the implementation of the new minimum wage, and has been pushing for its implementation since its introduction by the Federal Government in April 2020.
