8 killed new york truck attack
The 2017 New York City truck attack, also known as the Manhattan truck attack, was a terrorist attack that occurred on October 31, 2017, in Lower Manhattan, New York City. The attack was carried out by Sayfullo Saipov, a 29-year-old Uzbek national who drove a rented pickup truck into a bike path along the West Side of Manhattan, killing eight people and injuring 12 others.
The attack began at around 3:00 p.m. when Saipov, who was driving a rented Home Depot pickup truck, entered the bike path on West Street, which runs along the west side of Manhattan. He drove the truck for about a mile, striking multiple pedestrians and cyclists, before crashing into a school bus.
The victims of the attack were:
- Darren Drake, 40, a father of two from New Milford, New Jersey
- Nicholas Cleves, 23, a student from New York City
- Ariel Erlij, 43, a father of three from Argentina
- Hernán Ferruchi, 31, a father of two from Argentina
- Ariel Russo, 31, a mother of two from Argentina
- Ann-Laure Decadt, 31, a mother of three from Belgium
- Ann-Nur Parveen, 25, a mother of one from Uzbekistan
- Richard Batista, 32, a father of two from New York City
Saipov was shot and injured by police after he exited the truck and brandished a paintball gun and a pellet gun. He was taken into custody and later charged with providing material support to a terrorist organization and committing violence and destruction of a motor vehicle, among other charges.
The attack was claimed by the Islamic State (ISIS) and was described by the group as a "martyrdom operation." However, it is unclear whether Saipov had any direct connection to the group or whether he was inspired by its ideology.
The attack was widely condemned by world leaders and sparked a renewed debate about immigration and national security in the United States.
