2018 UTME: JAMB Registrar Blasts Parents Encouraging Exam Malpractices

The Registrar of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), Professor Is-haq Oloyede, has taken a swipe at parents who encourage their children to engage in examination malpractices.

Oloyede made the statement while speaking at a stakeholders' meeting in Abuja, the nation's capital, on Monday, June 18, 2018.

According to him, some parents are more interested in their children's grades than their moral upbringing, and this has led to the increasing cases of examination malpractices in the country.

He said, "Some parents are more interested in their children's grades than their moral upbringing. They are more concerned about their children's grades than their character. This is why we have a situation where children are being encouraged to cheat in exams."

Oloyede also lamented that some parents are willing to pay huge sums of money to ensure their children pass exams, even if it means compromising their integrity.

He said, "Some parents are willing to pay N500,000 to N1 million to ensure their children pass exams. This is unacceptable. We cannot continue to encourage this kind of behavior."

The JAMB registrar also warned that the board would not hesitate to take stern action against any candidate found to be involved in examination malpractices.

He said, "We will not hesitate to take stern action against any candidate found to be involved in examination malpractices. We will not tolerate any form of cheating in our exams."

Oloyede's statement is coming on the heels of the recent cases of examination malpractices in the country, including the recent incident where a student was caught with a fake hand during the 2018 UTME.

The JAMB registrar's statement has been widely welcomed by Nigerians, who have called for a more robust approach to tackling the menace of examination malpractices in the country.
