1st samuel new living translation
Here is the book of 1st Samuel in the New Living Translation (NLT):
1 Samuel 1
- There was a man named Elkanah who lived in Ramah, in the region of Zuph. He was a member of the family of Kohath, and he was a Zerahite.
- Elkanah had two wives, Hannah and Peninnah. Peninnah had children, but Hannah did not have any.
- Year after year, Elkanah would go to Shiloh to worship and sacrifice to the Lord Almighty, along with his entire family. He would give Peninnah, his wife, a special offering,
- but Hannah would go to the temple and weep. She would pray to the Lord, crying and saying, "Oh, Lord, if only you would help me, I'd be content!
- I've been miserable and have been crying for years, and I've been praying to you, Lord.
- Don't keep me from having children, or I'll be the only one without a child in my family." But the Lord didn't answer her.
- Elkanah would then go to his home, and Hannah would stay behind, weeping and eating nothing.
- The next morning, Elkanah would get up, go to her, and say, "Why are you crying, my dear? Why don't you eat? Why are you so sad?"
- Hannah would answer, "I'm not eating or drinking until I've gone to the Lord and prayed for him to help me."
- Elkanah would say, "Do what you think is best, my dear. Stay here or go to the temple. I'll stay with you wherever you choose."
- So Hannah got up and went to the temple. She prayed to the Lord, crying and saying,
- "Oh, Lord, if only you would help me, I'd be content! Don't keep me from having children, or I'll be the only one without a child in my family."
- Hannah was praying silently, but her lips were moving, and her voice was heard by Eli the priest.
- Eli thought she was drunk and said to her, "How long are you going to stay drunk? Leave your wine alone!"
- Hannah replied, "No, my lord, I'm not drunk. I'm just deeply troubled. I've been praying to the Lord.
- I'm not eating or drinking anything until I've gone to the Lord and prayed for him to help me."
- Eli answered, "Go in peace, and may the God of Israel grant you what you have asked of him."
- Hannah said, "I'm going to go back to my home, and I'll be content. I've asked the Lord for a son, and he has given me a son."
- Hannah got up and went to her home, and she gave birth to a son. She named him Samuel, saying, "I asked the Lord for him."
1 Samuel 2
- Hannah prayed and said, "My heart exults in the Lord; my strength is lifted up in my God! My mouth speaks boldly against my enemies, for I rejoice in your salvation.
- "There is no one holy like the Lord; there is no one besides you; there is no Rock like our God.
- "Do not keep talking so proudly or let your mouth speak such arrogance, for the Lord is a God who knows what is in the heart. He is a God who knows what is in the mind, and he will bring to light what is hidden in the darkness, and will expose the secrets on the light.
- "All the ways of the Lord are loving and faithful for those who keep his covenant and his testimonies.
- "For the Lord is the Rock that gives his people strength. He is a stronghold for his anointed ones, a shield for those who take refuge in him, and a mighty salvation for his servants.
- "The bows of the mighty are broken, and the feeble bind themselves with new strength.
- "Those who are full hire themselves out for food, but those who are hungry are hungry no more. She who is barren has borne seven children, but she who has many children languishes.
- "The childless wife is happy with the number of children she has, while the mother of seven is dying.
- "If only the Lord had respect for Jacob's people, if only he had taken pity on his chosen people!
- "Then I would have been his equal, says the Lord, and I would have been considered his servant, having given him a ransom for his life.
- "He would have been my servant, and I would have given him a portion among the people.
- "But the Lord has blessed the one who came to him."
1 Samuel 3
- The boy Samuel was serving the Lord under the supervision of Eli. In those days, the word of the Lord was rare, and visions were not common.
- One night Eli, whose eyes were becoming so weak he could barely see, was lying down in his bed.
- Suddenly, Samuel heard a voice calling his name. Samuel got up and said to Eli, "Here I am. You called me."
- But Eli replied, "I didn't call you, my son. Go back to bed."
- Samuel went back to bed, but he got up again and said to Eli, "Here I am. You called me." Eli replied, "I didn't call you, my son. Go back to bed."
- Samuel did this three times, and then Eli realized that the Lord was calling the boy.
- So Eli said to Samuel, "Go and lie down, and if you hear the voice again, say, 'Speak, Lord, for your servant is listening.'"
- Samuel went back to bed and fell asleep. Suddenly, he heard a voice calling his name again. Samuel got up, went to Eli, and said, "Here I am. You called me."
- Eli replied, "I didn't call you, my son. Go back to bed."
- Samuel did not ask Eli again, but he went back to bed.
- Then the Lord called Samuel again, and Samuel got up and said, "Speak, Lord, for your servant is listening."
- The Lord said to Samuel, "I am about to do something in Israel that will make the ears of everyone who hears about it tingle.
- "At that time I will fulfill all his requests and do what he asks me to do."
- Samuel went back to Eli and said, "I heard a voice calling my name, and I said, 'Here I am.' But Eli said, 'Go back to bed.'"
- Samuel replied, "I heard a voice calling my name, but I didn't recognize it."
- Eli said, "Go back to bed and if you hear the voice again, say, 'Speak, Lord, for your servant is listening.'"
1 Samuel 4
