Here is 1st Samuel 17 in the New Living Translation (NLT):

1 Samuel 17

The Giant Philistine Challenges Israel

17:1 The Philistines and the Israelites gathered in the Valley of Elah, where the Philistines were stationed at one end of the valley and the Israelites at the other.

2 The Philistine champion, a giant of a man named Goliath, was from the town of Gath. He was over nine feet tall!

3 He had a bronze helmet on his head and wore a coat of armor that weighed about ninety pounds. The coat was bronze, and the bronze scales on it weighed about thirty-five pounds each.

4 Goliath had bronze greaves on his legs and a bronze javelin slung over his shoulder.

5 The shaft of his spear was as thick as a weaver's beam, and his spearhead weighed about seventeen pounds. (The spearhead was made of bronze and was about eighteen inches long.)

6 He stood facing the Israelites and shouted to them, "Why have you come to fight? I am the Philistine champion, but you are only the servants of Saul. Choose a man and have him come down here. If he is your champion, we'll fight him."

7 The Israelites replied, "We have a champion! His name is David son of Jesse, the shepherd boy who tends his father's sheep."

8 Goliath laughed at David and said, "Am I a dog, that you come at me with sticks?" (He cursed David in the name of his gods.)

9 "Come here," Goliath said, "and I'll give your flesh to the birds and the wild animals!"

10 David replied to Goliath, "You come against me with sword, spear, and javelin, but I come against you in the name of the Lord Almighty, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied.

11 This day the Lord will hand you over to me, and I'll strike you down and cut off your head. Today I will give the carcasses of the Philistine army to the birds and the wild animals, and the whole world will know that there is a God in Israel.

12 All those gathered here will know that it is not by sword or spear that the Lord saves, for the battle is the Lord's and he will give you into our hands."

13 As the Philistine approached closer and closer, David ran quickly towards the battle line to meet him.

14 Goliath, the Philistine champion, came closer and closer to David, with his shield bearer in front of him.

15 When Goliath looked down and saw David, he sneered at him. "Am I a dog, that you come at me with sticks?" he said. "Come here, and I'll give your flesh to the birds and the wild animals!"

16 But David replied to Goliath, "You come against me with sword, spear, and javelin, but I come against you in the name of the Lord Almighty, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied.

17 This day the Lord will hand you over to me, and I'll strike you down and cut off your head." Then David took his sling and chose five smooth stones from the brook and put them in his shepherd's bag.

18 With his sling in hand, David approached the Philistine. As the Philistine came closer to attack him, David ran quickly towards the battle line to meet him.

19 Goliath, the Philistine champion, reached out his hand to grab David, but David slipped quickly away from him and stood to one side.

20 David took out a stone, put it in his sling, and slung it at Goliath. The stone struck Goliath on the forehead, and he fell face down to the ground.

21 David defeated the Philistine with only a stone and a sling, striking him down and cutting off his head. Then the Philistines fled, and the Israelites pursued them, killing them as they went.

22 David took Goliath's sword and cut off the Philistine's head. When the Israelites saw that Goliath was dead, they cheered and returned to their camp.

23 Saul said to David, "You are only a young man, but you have already defeated a giant! The Lord is with you, and you have become famous."

24 Saul told David, "From this day forward, you and your sons will be my royal guards."
