14 new cardinals appointed at the vatican by pope francis

On August 27, 2022, Pope Francis appointed 14 new cardinals from around the world, bringing the total number of cardinals in the Catholic Church to 233. The new cardinals are:

  6. Archbishop Raffaello Pietro Palmiero of Sant'Agata de' Goti, Italy
  7. Archbishop William Goh Seng Chye of Singapore
  8. Archbishop Robert Walter McElroy of San Diego, California, USA
  9. Archbishop Virgilio do Carmo da Silva, OFM, of Dili, East Timor
  10. Archbishop Peter Okpaleke of Ekwulobia, Nigeria
  11. Archbishop Anthony Poola of Hyderabad, India
  12. Archbishop Paulo Cezar Costa of Brasília, Brazil
  13. Archbishop Leonardo Ulloa Calvo of San Salvador, El Salvador
  14. Archbishop Fidél de Jesus Ramos Lara of Tuxtla Gutiérrez, Mexico

The new cardinals come from 12 different countries and represent a diverse range of cultures and regions. The appointments were announced by the Vatican on August 27, 2022, and the new cardinals will be formally installed at a consistory ceremony on October 5, 2022.
