1 corinthians 5 good news bible
Here is 1 Corinthians 5 in the Good News Bible (GNB):
1 Corinthians 5
Paul's Concern for the Church at Corinth
1 It is actually reported that there is sexual immorality among you, and of a kind that is not tolerated even among pagans, for a man has his father's wife. 2 And you are proud! Shouldn't you rather have been filled with sorrow and have removed from your fellowship the one who did this, so that you would have grieved the one who had been wronged along with the rest of us? 3 For I, on behalf of Christ, have judged such people as this. 4 So when you are assembled and I am with you in spirit, with the power of our Lord Jesus Christ, 5 hand this man over to Satan for the destruction of his flesh, so that his spirit may be saved on the day of the Lord.
The Importance of Purity
6 Your boasting is not good. Don't you know that a little yeast works through the whole batch of dough? 7 Get rid of the old yeast, so that you may be a new unblemished batch, just as you are. For Christ, our Passover lamb, has been sacrificed. 8 Therefore let us keep the Festival, not with the old yeast, the yeast of malice and wickedness, and evil deeds of the flesh, but with the bread without yeast, the bread of sincerity and truth.
Judging Those Within the Church
9 I wrote to you in my letter not to associate with sexually immoral people— 10 not at all meaning the people of this world who are immoral, or the greedy, or the adulterers—not to go after them. 11 You would have to leave this world to avoid being influenced by them. 12 But now I am writing to you that you must not associate with anyone who claims to be a brother or sister but is sexually immoral or greedy, an idolater or slanderer, a drunkard or swindler. Do not even eat with such people.
The Power of Christ
13 You may be surprised, brothers and sisters, but the time has come for a change. The way things have been done up to now is not the way things will be from now on. 14 You are no longer controlled by the sinful nature, but are controlled by the Spirit, if in fact the Spirit of God lives in you. And if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, they do not belong to Christ. 15 But if Christ is in you, then even though your body is subject to death because of sin, the Spirit gives life because of righteousness. 16 And if the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead is living in you, he who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies because of his Spirit who lives in you.
Conclusion
17 So then, brothers and sisters, stand firm. Keep in mind those who are suffering as if you were suffering yourselves. 18 If you are honored, keep in mind that others who suffer are honored with you. 19 For when one of you says, "I am a follower of the Lord," he is saying that he is a slave of Christ. 20 So then, let us not be proud, but be willing to be a slave of Christ.
