Pep Guardiola has praised the brilliant showing of two-goal Champion League star John Stones in spite of the need for him to work hard to assume a world-class status.
The English player scored by means of two unstoppable headers, as City thumped its Dutch opposition, Feyenoord 4-0 in Rotterdam on Wednesday. It has also, by that victory, proved it is one of the favorites for the European title.
In spite of a poor display during the qualification stage the previous year, Guardiola was pleased to see a better City side, now that the league has started.
“Last season we were not able to win one game away (in the group stage).
“If you want to win, you have to beat them at home,” he said.
The duo of midfielders Bernardo Silva, assisted by Kevin De Bruyne, weakened the Feyenoord defence line in an action-packed encounter.
Not later than 10 minutes, Sergio Aguero increased the goal tally to 2, after he shot in a half-volley from Kyle Walker’s pass.
Gabriel Jesus had his fair share of goals with a tap-in on 25 minutes prior to Stone’s header in the second half, made possible by De Bruyne’s corner kick.
Guardiola observed Stone’s attacking prowess yet, he said his primary job is to improve his defensive play.
“John Stones, there is no doubt about his quality,” he said.
“But he knows what the gap is to improve as a football player, he has to win the duels.
“When he will be able to do that he will become an exceptional central defender,” he said.
