Oh boy, the people who have strong opinions about COVID-19 vaccines are going to have a field day with this one. A private jet belonging to Bill Gates, the billionaire founder of Windows and one of the richest men in the world, has been spotted in Johannesburg this week.

Bill Gates’ private jet spotted in Johannesburg by flight tracker

An automated feed that tracks his private planes – run by aviation specialist Jack Sweeney – reported that the aircraft had touched down at an airport in Johannesburg on Thursday afternoon. The 2018 Gulfstream G650 has not moved since.

It’s unclear if Bill Gates is on the plane or not, or whether a delegation representing the vaccine-activist has decided to take a trip on his behalf. A reason for this visit also hasn’t been specified. Nonetheless, speculation surrounding the flight is certainly capturing the imagination online.

‘Conspiracy favourite’ sets tongues wagging

To some, Bill Gates is a champion of vaccine equity across the world. The spread of COVID-19 exacerbated the need to distribute healthcare tools to the poorest countries on the planet, and the tech entrepreneur has spent the last few years raising awareness of future pandemics.

To others, however, the language is much more colourful. Many conspiracy theorists have him pinned down as a ‘source of evil’, stemming mainly from his promotion of COVID-19 vaccinations. So the sight of his private jet landing in Johannesburg perhaps won’t put suspicions minds at ease.

Bill Gates’ last high-profile appearance in South Africa came back in February 2020 – just before ‘you know what’ happened. His involvement in a celebrity tennis match two years ago was fairly jovial and transparent. However, officials are yet to reveal why his plane is now in Gauteng.
