The Germany playmaker says that he looks up to compatriot and team-mate Per Mertesacker and hopes that the defender returns to full fitness in the very near future
Mesut Ozil has labelled Per Mertesacker as a “role model” and says he hopes the defender is back in action for Arsenal very soon.
Mertesacker, 32, is yet to play a single minute for the Gunners this season after suffering a serious knee injury in pre-season.
Ozil has played alongside the cenre-back at Werder Bremen and Arsenal, as well as the Germany national team.
And the playmaker has revealed that he looks up to his compatriot and the way he conducts himself on and off the pitch.
“I’ve known Per for a while, because we’ve played together in Bremen, for the national team and here too,” Ozil told Arsenal Player.
“I can only say positives about him. He gives everything for the team, not just for himself, but for everyone.
“Off the pitch, he watches the games and comes into the dressing room. He’s just a role model and we’re pleased to have him here. I want him to get fit again and back on the pitch as quickly as possible.
“I sincerely hope that he comes back really quickly.”
Ozil is currently with the Germany squad ahead of their World Cup qualifiers against Czech Republic and Northern Ireland.
