New cases of polio in nigeria

A very important topic!

Nigeria has made significant progress in reducing polio cases in recent years, but unfortunately, the country still reports occasional cases of wild poliovirus (WPV) transmission.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Nigeria National Primary Healthcare Development Agency (NPHCDA), Nigeria has reported the following cases of wild poliovirus in recent years:

The majority of these cases have been reported in the following states:

  1. Borno State: 24 cases in 2020, 17 cases in 2019, and 15 cases in 2018.
  2. Yobe State: 10 cases in 2020, 6 cases in 2019, and 5 cases in 2018.
  3. Adamawa State: 5 cases in 2020, 4 cases in 2019, and 3 cases in 2018.
  4. Gombe State: 4 cases in 2020, 3 cases in 2019, and 2 cases in 2018.

The Nigerian government, with support from international partners, has been working to strengthen its polio eradication efforts, including:

  1. Improving surveillance and detection of polio cases.
  2. Enhancing vaccination coverage, particularly in hard-to-reach areas.
  3. Conducting mop-up vaccination campaigns to target areas with high transmission.
  4. Strengthening community engagement and social mobilization to promote polio vaccination.

Despite these efforts, polio remains a significant public health challenge in Nigeria, and continued vigilance and investment are necessary to achieve the goal of polio eradication.
