Mia Kirshner was born on January 25, 1975 in Toronto, Ontario. She is the daughter of Etti (Henrietta) who was a teacher and Sheldon Kirshner who was a journalist and wrote for The Canadian Jewish News. Mia Kirshner is a grandchild of Holocaust survivors; her father was born in the Bad Reichenhall displaced people camp in Germany in 1946. And, he had met Mia Kirshner’s mother, a Jewish refugee from Bulgaria, after they fled to Israel. Her paternal grandparents are Polish Jews.

Mia Kirshner started her career in 1989 in Loving the Alien, a second-season episode of War of the Worlds as both Jo and her doppelgänger. She made her film debut when she was 18 in Love and Human Remains where she convinced her father to sign a nudity waiver to play a dominatrix.
