The Management and staff of the Lagos State Teaching Hospital (LASUTH) on Wednesday gathered to pay tribute to the first Nigerian paediatric surgeon, Prof. Michael Bankole who served the institution for 15 years.
The event tagged; “Choral Morning Tribute” was held at the MRC Hall of the hospital on Wednesday, February 27, 2019.
The event was attended by the Chief Medical Director of the hospital, Prof. Adetokunbo Fabanwo and other members of the hospital staff as they extolled the virtues of Bankole.
Speaking at the event, Fabanwo stated that the deceased was the Dean when he graduated as a Medical Doctor early 1970s, adding that he was the one that trained him to be a medical doctor.
In his words; “I was a medical student in the early 1970s when Prof. Bankole came to the University of Ife. He was the one that trained me to be a medical doctor. I met him many years after I was the acting Chief Medical Director of LASUTH. I gave him a job as a consultant paediatric surgeon and he worked here for 15 years.
“When we were about to engage him in 2003, people were skeptical about his age, but I assured them that he was a good material. Over the years, he showed he was a special breed and that is why we are celebrating him,” he added.
In her remarks at the ceremony, Dr. (Mrs.) Lolade Wright, Chairperson of the Organizing Committee described the late Professor of Paediatrics as an erudite scholar who dedicated his life to serving humanity.
She said; “He also contributed immensely to the growth of the Lagos State University College of Medicine. He will be greatly missed. He taught a lot of people and he was passionate about teaching, excellence and professionalism.”
