Arsene Wenger believes that the club’s marquee 53m Euros French striker, Alex Lacazette’s current abysmal performance is due to the January arrival of Gabonese forward, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang from Borussia Dortmund.
Arsenal fell to a 1-0 defeat to bitter rivals, Tottenham on Saturday – a match that saw Lacazette come from the bench and miss two glaring late chances to salvage the match. The loss further dented the Gunners’ hopes of finishing in the top four.
At the post-match conference, Wenger stated that Lacazette’s dip in confidence may be related to the fact that he has a new competitor for his playing position.
“I don’t know what happened, did he not touch the ball well? It can happen, it is a fraction of a second,” the Arsenal boss enthused. “Maybe the confidence is not at its highest because he has seen a competitor coming in for him.”
Since his arrival from Lyon in the summer, Lacazette has scored just nine goals in twenty-nine appearances for Arsenal.
