DURBAN – Tongaat SAPS is investigating a murder after a second taxi owner was shot and murdered in a drive-by shooting in Durban’s north in four days.

According to police spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Nqobile Gwala, the incident occurred around 1.50 p.m. on Wednesday on Gopallal Road in Tongaat.

“A 69-year-old man’s body was discovered with gunshot wounds to the body,” Gwala added.

She stated that the culprits were still unknown, as was the motivation for the homicide.

The scenario was still going on.

Following reports of a gunshot near an oThongathi high school, IPSS Medical Rescue and other emergency services arrived to the area.

According to IPSS Medical Rescue spokesperson Paul Herbst, upon the arrival of advanced life support paramedics, a guy, allegedly a cab owner, was gazing at automobiles on the side of the road when a vehicle drew up and fired numerous bullets, striking the man.

“Advanced life support paramedics evaluated the victim and determined that he had incurred fatal injuries,” Herbst added.

“AK47 cartridges were discovered on the spot.”

Prem Balram, a spokeswoman for Reaction Unit South Africa (Rusa), stated many expended high-calibre cartridges were collected on the site.

“It was confirmed that the deceased was a cab owner.” When the event occurred, he was apparently visiting a technician who was repairing one of his vehicles. The suspects are said to have fled in a white VW Polo towards Emona. However, this could not be confirmed right away.”

Balram stated that response officers performed a thorough search for the culprits, but no arrests were made.

Kgomotso Mphalaborwa Morota Malatsi questioned how many cab proprietors remained, but also expressed regret that more might die because “our black brothers consider this industry is their entitlement.”

The taxi industry, according to Lindelwa Masuku, is a risky business to be in.

Thoko Luthuli concurred, saying that starting a cab company was a suicide effort.

“Last week, another taxi owner was shot near Cornubia flats, and now this,” Thina Ncayiyana added. “South Africa is gradually becoming Mexico.”

A taxi driver, 52, was shot and murdered in front of his family in Cornubia, north of Durban, on Saturday.

Rusa was dispatched to the Cornubia housing complex at 4:32 p.m., according to Balram.

When they arrived, it was discovered that the dead was in a bedroom on the top floor of the house with his partner and two boys.

“Two guys entered the house and shot the taxi boss numerous times in front of his family before fleeing.” “At the site, several 9mm expended cartridges were retrieved,” Balram stated.
