Biography

Rabi’u Musa Kwankwaso was born on the 21st of October 1956 in Kwankwaso, a village in Madobi. His father was the village head (the Sarkin Fulani, Dagacin Kwankwaso). He was later promoted to the District Head of Madobi with the title of Majidadin Kano, Hakimin Madobi by the Kano Emirate Council of Emir, Ado Bayero.

Kwankwaso attended Kwankwaso Primary School, Gwarzo Boarding Senior Primary School, Wudil Craft School and Kano Technical College. Later on, he furthered his education at the Kaduna Polytechnic (Both ND and HND). During his stay at the Polytechnic, he was reported to be an active student leader. He was an elected official of the Kano State Students Association.

From 1982 to 1983, he attended postgraduate studies at the Middlesex Polytechnic in the United Kingdom. And in 1985, he bagged a master’s degree in water engineering at the Loughborough University of Technology in the UK. Later in 2022, he also bagged a PhD in water engineering at the Sharda University, India.

In 1975, Kwankwaso joined the Kano State Water Resources and Engineering Construction Agency of the Kano State Government. He served there for 17 years on various rankings and later on became the principal water engineer.

In 1992, Kwankwaso joined politics and became a member of the People’s Front faction of the SDP led by General Shehu Yar’adua and others as members. The same year, he was elected as a member of the House of Representatives representing the Madobi Federal Constituency.


During the 1995 Constitutional Conference, he was elected as one of the delegates from Kano as a member of the PDP movement led by Musa Yar’adua. But he later joined the Democratic Party of Nigeria (DPN) in the political transition program of General Sani Abacha.

In 1998, Rabi’u Kwankwaso joined the PDP movement led by Mallam Musa Gwadabe and others. Then in 1999, he contested the PDP primaries alongside Abdullahi Umar Ganduje (Kano State Governor) and several others. Kwankwaso won the elections, emerged as the Kano state Governor, and served from 1999-2003. After serving his first term, he ran for re-election but lost to Malam Ibrahim Shekarau.

In 2011, he contested again for the office of the Kano State Governor and was re-elected. He served from the 29th of May, 2011 to the 29th of May, 2015. During this term, he was said to be built roads, hospitals, schools, and even awarded scholarships. In August 2013, Kwankwaso joined six other serving governors in forming the G-7 faction within PDP. But later that year in November, defected to APC alongside five other members of the G-7.

In 2015, Kwankwaso contested in the APC presidential primaries held in Lagos but came second after Muhammadu Buhari who had 3,430 votes while he had 974 votes. Kwankwaso accepting defeat went ahead and gave his public approval to the winner, Muhammadu Buhari.

2018-Present

In October 2018, Kwankwaso contested the PDP presidential primaries and took fourth place behind Atiku Abubakar. He endorsed Atiku Abubakr and didn’t take up re-election to the Senate, Ibrahim Shekarau then replaced him.

On the 22nd of February 2022, Kwankwaso set up the National Movement as a political movement against the two major political parties, APC and PDP. He co-opted the New Nigeria Peoples Party as the political wing of the movement and became the national leader of the party on the 30th of March 2022. He is the NNPP presidential flagbearer for the 2023 general elections.
